Sinclair calculator for weightlifting

Short answer

The Sinclair total compares weightlifters of different body weights: it is the total you would be expected to lift at the heaviest reference body weight with the same ability. Using the 2025–2028 coefficients, a woman weighing 67.8 kg with a 257 kg total has a coefficient of 1.256288 and a Sinclair total of 322.866 kg.

Worked out from A and b; these match the published 2025–2028 tables to six decimals. Multiply your total by the coefficient (Sinclair coefficients, 2025–2028).

The IWF formula

The Sinclair coefficient answers "what would this athlete total if they were in the heaviest category, at the same level of ability?" It is 10^(A × X²), where X = log10(body weight ÷ b), and 1 for anyone heavier than b (Sinclair coefficients, 2025–2028).

For the Olympiad from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2028 this calculator uses A = 0.700767819 and b = 201.159 kg for men, and A = 0.674107991 and b = 163.918 kg for women. The published tables list the coefficient for every 0.1 kg rather than printing A and b; these values reproduce every one of the tables' 3,054 coefficients to six decimals. For example, the table gives 1.256288 for a 67.8 kg woman, so a 257 kg total scores 322.9 kg (Sinclair coefficients, 2025–2028).

Sinclair totals from meets before 2025 used the 2021–2024 coefficients (men A = 0.722762521, b = 193.609 kg; women A = 0.787004341, b = 153.757 kg), so compare totals worked out on the same set (IWF: Sinclair, 2021–2024).

Building your total

Estimate your snatch and clean and jerk maxes with the one rep max calculator, and load the bar with the barbell plate calculator. Powerlifters use IPF GL points instead.

Common questions

How is the Sinclair coefficient calculated?

If your body weight x is at or below b, the coefficient is 10^(A × X²) with X = log10(x ÷ b); above b it is 1. For 2025–2028, men use A = 0.700767819 and b = 201.159 kg, women A = 0.674107991 and b = 163.918 kg.

Why do the coefficients change?

They are derived from world record totals across the body-weight categories and are adjusted for each Olympic cycle, so a Sinclair total is best compared with others worked out on the same coefficients.

Does it work for young or very light lifters?

The published tables start at 32 kg for men and 28 kg for women, but the coefficients come from adult world records.
