Waist-to-hip ratio calculator
Short answer
Waist-to-hip ratio is your waist divided by your hips. A 84 cm waist and 100 cm hips give 0.84. The World Health Organization treats a ratio of 0.90 or more in men and 0.85 or more in women as a substantially increased risk of metabolic complications. It describes where your body stores fat; it is not a diagnosis.

The WHO thresholds
A WHO expert consultation on waist circumference and waist–hip ratio sets out how to measure both and uses a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.90 or more in men and 0.85 or more in women as the level at which the risk of metabolic complications is substantially increased (WHO, 2011).
Fat stored around the middle is the reason these measures exist. Check your waist-to-height ratio and body roundness index, which use the same waist measurement.

Common questions
What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
The WHO marks a substantially increased risk of metabolic complications from 0.90 in men and 0.85 in women, so below those values is the target.
How do I measure my waist and hips?
Measure your waist midway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, and your hips around the widest part of your buttocks. Stand relaxed with feet together and breathe out normally; keep the tape snug but not tight.
Is waist-to-hip ratio better than BMI?
It answers a different question. BMI looks at weight for height; waist-to-hip ratio shows whether fat sits around the middle. Using both, plus your waist-to-height ratio, gives a fuller picture.
