Steps to distance calculator

Short answer

Distance = steps × step length. With a 70 cm (27.6 in) step, 10,000 steps is 7.0 km (4.35 miles), about 1 h 40 min of walking at 100 steps a minute. Step length varies a lot between people, so use your own: iPhone records it in the Health app as Walking Step Length.

Step length, cadence and how many steps

iPhone measures your average step length while you walk with it and saves it to Health as Walking Step Length (Apple HealthKit: walkingStepLength). That is a measurement of how you actually walk, rather than an estimate from your height.

For adults aged 21–40, walking at 100 steps a minute or faster is a good marker of moderate intensity and 130 or faster of vigorous intensity (Tudor-Locke et al., 2019).

In 47,471 adults across 15 cohorts, more daily steps meant progressively lower mortality risk until about 6,000–8,000 steps a day in people 60 and over, and 8,000–10,000 in younger adults (Paluch et al., 2022).

Common questions

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on your step length: about 2012 steps at an 80 cm step, 2299 at 70 cm and 2682 at 60 cm. Divide 1,609 m by your step length in metres.

How do I find my step length?

On iPhone, open Health and look for Walking Step Length, which your phone measures while you walk with it. Or walk normally over a measured distance, such as 20 m, count your steps and divide the distance by the steps.

How many steps a day should I aim for?

A meta-analysis of 15 cohorts found the drop in mortality risk levelled off at 8,000–10,000 steps a day for adults under 60 and 6,000–8,000 for adults 60 and over. Below those levels, every extra step was linked to lower risk.
