Heart rate recovery calculator

Short answer

Heart rate recovery is how far your heart rate falls in the first minute after you stop exercising: peak heart rate minus your heart rate one minute later. In a large clinical study, a drop of 12 bpm or less after a treadmill test was defined as abnormal. Bigger drops generally mean a quicker return to rest.

A drop of 25 bpm is above the 12 bpm threshold Cole et al. used after clinical treadmill tests. Compare it across similar workouts rather than reading too much into a single session.

How heart rate recovery is measured

Apple defines its Cardio Recovery measurement as the reduction in heart rate from your peak exercise rate to the rate one minute after exercising ended (Apple HealthKit: heartRateRecoveryOneMinute). The research definition is the same: in Cole et al.'s study of 2,428 adults having symptom-limited clinical exercise tests, heart rate recovery was the fall from peak exercise to one minute after stopping (Cole et al., 1999).

To get a clean reading on your watch, end the workout as soon as you stop exercising. The one-minute window is measured from the end of the workout, so if you keep it running through a cool-down, your heart rate has already started falling and the drop can look smaller.

What the 12 bpm threshold means

Cole et al. defined a drop of 12 bpm or less as abnormal. In their cohort, 26% of patients fell into that group, and over six years a low recovery was strongly associated with a higher risk of death, independent of workload and other test findings (Cole et al., 1999). That was a clinical population tested on a treadmill under supervision, so it is context, not a verdict on one workout.

Is there a heart rate recovery chart by age?

We have not found a widely used age-by-age reference for one-minute recovery like the ones for resting heart rate or VO2 max. Recovery depends heavily on how hard you were working when you stopped, what you did in that minute, heat and hydration. The most reliable comparison is with your own recovery after similar workouts.

Common questions

What is a good heart rate recovery after 1 minute?

There is no single target. Cole et al. (1999) defined a drop of 12 bpm or less in the first minute after a clinical treadmill test as abnormal. Above that, a larger drop generally reflects a faster return toward rest, and your own trend over weeks is more useful than one reading.

How does Apple Watch measure Cardio Recovery?

Apple defines the measurement as the reduction in heart rate from your peak exercise rate to the rate one minute after the workout ended. End the workout as soon as you stop exercising so the watch compares the right two values.

Why is my Cardio Recovery low on some days?

A cool-down before ending the workout, a short or easy session, heat, dehydration, poor sleep and illness can all shrink the one-minute drop. Look at the pattern across similar workouts rather than a single day.
